News and the End of the Year
It seems the News world takes a break between Christmas and New Year. Things are mellow, folks are not that interested, and things don't really happen too much that is interesting. Unfortunately, this calm before the storm was broken yesterday with the callous and cowardly murder of Benizir Bhutto. But, I read about the tragic consequences facing the political media who had to rush back to Iowa and stay there through the New Year to cover the caucus.
It's a time more for reflection. On the year past, the state of the nation, the possibilities for the future. It is like one giant collective breath before diving into the water to swim into a cavern. Stopping along a river to examine the rapids before taking them on. Gazing down a mountain before turning your skiis.
Iowa on January 3, is the real start of the race. The rest has been warming up. People have just enough time to nurse the New Year hangover and then get back to business. It will be captivating.
