As Americans, we continually decide whether we can obtain good government or if the destiny of nations is determined only by wealth, influence, and fraud. It is as true in our own day as it was when the nation was formed. This book tries to convey the substance of American politics, which is too often argumentative, imbued with caustic commentary, and guided by visceral reactions...we have to learn how to engage in constructive dialogue without resorting to resentment and fury.

"One nation under God" doesn't mean unquestioning allegiance to a single group, party, or ideology. The strength of our country lies in the diversity of opinion and thought of all citizens. Differences and disagreements are essential to a democracy. However, as participants, we must learn to discuss issues without impugning the loyalty, patriotism, or sanity of every philosophical adversary. In order to do this, we must educate ourselves about the issues and respect the rights of others to hold alternative views. If we do this, we will see that the challenges facing us are just that...challenges to be overcome.
